I love riding my bike at night. This is probably not the first time I have said this, but I don't mind reiterating, I love that feeling, late at night, when half of singapore is asleep, the other half at home in front of the computer or the TV, or out at Zouk, MOS, St James, and the roads that are clogged, narrow, exhaust filled in the day have been wondrously transformed into clear, wide boulevards made for cruising. The stretch of highway from Thomson alongside the old police academy, to after Toa Payoh where traffic branches off onto the CTE, in the day I'd take at least 15 minutes to clear, but at night it's a breeze, I take 5 minutes and along the way you reminisce, you pass the places that used to mean something to you, landmarks along the routes you used to take; Elizabeth's grandma's place, block of flats with its symmetrical corridor lights that always seem to call out to you on the way home on Henry's Car; it's the next exit to Bishan, Yishun, go on to the next, and all of a sudden, you start to miss everyone, if only for that transient flash of a moment.
