Sam Abell

Some of my Vpost packages arrived today. The delivery man, Martin, was kind enough to deliver them to school and I took a welcome breather from my marking to unwrap the packages.


I love the writing in Sam Abell's book - The Life of A Photograph.

About this photo, he writes, " But to me the picture also has its own literary and imaginative implications. It's like a scene from a short story that will soon change. The woman will walk off, the bus pull out, the light fade. Someone else will sit at this table. But for a moment the scene is suspended and belongs to anyone who can picture being here."

Elim Chew from 77th Street was in school this afternoon to give the students a talk. It turned out to be a real good talk; really inspirational. This Distinguished Speaker series, it's really something. It's a pity, people my age, we hardly had opportunities like this, growing up.

The last grandmother.


I remember when I was little and in Primary School, everyday after dinner, a large group of grandmothers, from all around the estate would congregate under the void deck of my apartment block.They would sit around the stone table and chit chat. It made for a very lively atmosphere.

As the years passed, their numbers slowly dwindled. Today, only one out of that gregarious group is left.

I forgot the cat food.


I was about to turn in tonight, when I realized I forgot to buy cat food. I put on running shoes intending make amends by running to the nearby petrol kiosk to make the purchase. But when I got there, I found out they didn't stock cat food. Instead I bought myself a packet of Famous Amos.

I discovered a post script at the end of the page after the lyrics, in the album sleeve, today. It said :

My first MMS.

I received my first MMS this morning. My dear girlfriend sent me a promotional poster for the DNA concert this Saturday at the National Stadium. We will be going!!! Can't Wait.

United Woes.

United suffered another setback today, this time, in the league. They were unable to break down a stubborn Blackburn defence. Which means even if Chelsea lose, they will still be one point ahead. It was disappointing to watch, but not as painful as waking up at 3am watching the team race into a 3-0 lead and then concede 2 goals to lose on away goals. That one really hurt and although I am not the fanatic I was 10 years ago, Wednesday hurt. I really think the team needs a creative central midfielder .

Kerouac.

Years ago, I picked up Jack Kerouac's On the Road from a bookstore in Khao San, and it has left an indelible impression on me.

Here is a lovely quote from him.

“The only people for me are the mad ones, the ones who are mad to live, mad to talk, mad to be saved, desirous of everything at the same time, the ones who never yawn or say a commonplace thing, but burn, burn, burn, like fabulous yellow roman candles exploding like spiders across the stars and in the middle you see the blue centerlight pop and everybody goes "Awww!”

I can't wait to visit City Lights Bookstore when we visit San Francisco in June!
